Lots of good points. What annoys me most about LinkedIn is it takes forever to update the basic titles next to peoples' names when you look at them on lists not directly on their profiles. So basic to fix, and so detrimental to users' personal brands.

Beth Evans’s last blog post..Tips for Students on Finding Post-Grad Jobs Abroad - Part 1: Before You Leave

Hi Anthony,

Thanks for your comment. I agree that LinkedIn offers plenty of value. But I also believe that their eye is off the ball - their core constituents. The questions I ask about "who is LinkedIn's primary audience?" are pretty much rhetorical, as their "paying customers" would not be there if it wasn't for their "free customers." Unfortunately, LinkedIn is behaving like many companies today and courting the money instead of catering to the *core* customers and their needs. LinkedIn's philosophy is "Relationships Matter." Well, prove it.

p.s. I like your blog. I'm following you now on Twitter, too.

Thanks for the comment and the Stumble, Jacob. Yep, the noise about LinkedIn usability is getting louder these days. Also just heard about someone who's contacts "evaporated" on LinkedIn. Advice for users: Backup LinkedIn contacts. Advice for LinkedIn: Provide a method to backup contacts.

Good article. I have been on LinkedIn for about 2 years now. The most valuable part of the service is by far the Answers section to me. I am able to find answers through basic searching (which could be better IMHO), but even more so, I get to answer the questions of other people.

This has generated a healthy stream of prospects, of which some have converted into clients. It also has the side benefit of allowing me a respected area to "personally brand myself" as an expert in my field of TeleConferencing and WebConferencing. I have had people recommend me to others in the market as they have seen me answer numerous industry questions in LinkedIn.

LinkedIn is obviously far from perfect, and I hope they don't go overboard with all of these little apps and extras (do I need more flashy things on another profile to read?), but I consider it a valuable resource.
